Recklessly Starting a Fire is a Criminal Offence |
||
|
With the warm, dry weather, the risk of moorland and grass fires is significantly increased. Even a single spark from a cigarette, disposable barbecue, campfire or discarded litter can start a fire that spreads rapidly, threatening people, wildlife, property and the countryside.
Deliberately or recklessly starting a fire is a criminal offence and may result in arrest and prosecution for offences such as arson or criminal damage. Those responsible could face a criminal record, substantial fines and, in serious cases, imprisonment.
If you are enjoying our parks, moorland and open spaces, please act responsibly, take your litter home, dispose of smoking materials safely and never light fires or use disposable barbecues in dry grassland areas.
If you see a fire or large amounts of smoke, call 999 immediately. Early reporting can help prevent a small fire from becoming a major incident. Greater Manchester Police | Neighbourhood Policing Team
