UPDATE REGARDING THE DOVESTONES MOORLAND FIRES |
||
|
Good morning everyone.
I would like to provide an update regarding the ongoing moorland fires at Dovestones and reassure our communities that Greater Manchester Police is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
We are aware of social media posts that circulated over the weekend, which have since been removed, relating to reports of fireworks being set off in the area following the tragic death of a young male on Friday evening.
While it would be inappropriate for us to speculate on the cause of the fire at this stage, I want to reassure residents that we are pursuing all available lines of enquiry. Reports of potential criminal activity, including arson, are being thoroughly investigated and we will take robust action against anyone found to have committed offences.
I would also like to remind everyone that a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) remains in force across the moorland areas and Dovestones Reservoir. This prohibits the use of fireworks, barbecues, open fires and other activities that pose a significant risk to public safety and the environment. Any breaches identified will be dealt with appropriately.
I want to sincerely thank members of the public who have come forward with information. The support of our communities is invaluable, and all information received is being reviewed as part of our ongoing investigation. Your vigilance and willingness to assist are greatly appreciated.
I would also like to place on record our gratitude to our colleagues at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters have been working tirelessly in extremely challenging conditions to contain the fire and prevent further spread, with strong winds adding to an already difficult situation. They are putting themselves at risk to protect our communities, the environment and local wildlife, and they deserve our utmost respect and support.
Finally, I would ask that members of the public continue to avoid the affected area unless absolutely necessary. Emergency services need the space to carry out their work safely and effectively, and unnecessary visitors can hamper these efforts.
Road closures remain in place at Holmfirth Road and Bank Lane with no access to Dovestones Reservoir.
We will continue to provide updates as appropriate. Thank you for your continued support, patience and cooperation.
Regards
PS 1650 Andy Holian - Saddleworth & Lees Neighbourhood Sergeant
