Police are reminding members of the public to stay viglant when using cash machines to help prevent distraction theft.
Distraction theft occurs when a criminal deliberately diverts your attention so they can steal your cash, bank card or personal belongings. They may offer unsolicited help, ask for directions, spill something on you, or try to engage you in converstaion while you are using the machine.
To protect yourself: If you believe you have been targeted or have witnessed suspicious behaviour around cash machines, report it to the police. In an emergency, or if a crime is taking place, always call 999. For non-emergency matters, contact the police on 101 or report online via www.met.police.uk
By staying alert and following these simple precautions, you can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of distraction theft.
