||
|
As warmer weather continues, we would like to remind residents of the dangers of leaving dogs unattended in vehicles. Even on a mildly warm day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. Dogs are unable to regulate their body temperature as effectively as humans and can quickly suffer from heat stress, heatstroke, dehydration, organ failure, and in some cases death. Signs of heat-related distress in dogs include: Many people believe leaving a window slightly open or parking in the shade will keep a dog safe; however, temperatures inside a vehicle can still rise to fatal levels within minutes. The LawUnder the Animal Welfare Act 2006, owners and those responsible for animals have a legal duty to ensure their welfare needs are met. Leaving a dog in conditions that cause unnecessary suffering can lead to prosecution, fines, disqualification from owning animals, and imprisonment in the most serious cases. What To DoIf you see a dog showing signs of distress in a vehicle: Help Keep Animals SafeIf you are running errands, attending appointments, or visiting local shops, please leave your pets at home where they are cool, comfortable and have access to fresh water. Together, we can help prevent unnecessary suffering and keep our pets safe during hot weather. Neighbourhood Policing Team | ||
