Good Morning; Inappropriate use of off road motorbikes, electric motorbikes and adapted or de-restricted electrically assisted pedal cycles is an issue that is frequently raised by our communities in incident reports, at meetings and on the street.
Operation Hurricane is GMPs response to the misuse of these vehicles that continues to cause significant disruption within communities, affecting quality of life and posing serious risks to the public.
In some cases, this behaviour has resulted in serious injuries and fatal collisions, with devastating consequences for victims, their families and local neighbourhoods.
Officers from our Roads Policing Unit (RPU), Drone and Motorcycle Unit and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) regularly join neighbourhood teams in targeting specific hotspot areas to deter, detect and disrupt offences from taking place. The teams work closely with other GMP teams, partners and communities to use the latest intelligence to target offenders.
Last weekend specialist officers from Operation Hurricane were on duty in the Bolton North area targeting the Tonge Moor, Hall ’i’th Wood and Breightmet areas.
While on duty officers were able to pursue, stop and seize a number of electric motorcycles and illegally adapted pedal cycles – including one device capable of approaching 80mph, used in our communities.
Also seized was another motorcycle suspected of being stolen and used to commit further crime and another motorcycle was stopped and seized by special constables days earlier on Tonge Moor Road.
Where appropriate riders were also reported for the relevant offences which may mean fines, points on their driving licences and even disqualification.
Officers also stopped and spoke with a number of other motorists and particularly motor cyclists to ensure compliance.
