Recently officers responding to a 999 call relating to a possible burglary in progress were delayed in reaching the address for several minutes due to being unable to locate the property from the street. On another occasion officers were only able to quickly find a named property which was undergoing renovation and not displaying a nameplate due to the local knowledge of an on duty PCSO. Fortunately, on these occasions the delay did not affect the outcome however it does bring into focus the problem.
In emergencies minutes and seconds can count.
Despite advances in modern technology finding addresses still often relies on the human eye being able to correctly identify an address from the street. The issue can be particularly problematic when trying to locate named, rather than numbered properties or properties that have been sub-divided such as “flats above” that may have access points away from the main building entrance – such as in back street or via a communal access point.
We would like all residents to take a few moments to consider their own addresses. Numbers cost from a few pence for simple self adhesive digits and can really make the difference in an emergency.
Please take a moment to ask yourself…
• Is your property number or name visible from the street to both front and rear (where applicable)?
• Are there any obstructions to the number or nameplate such as trees, gates or do your parked vehicles obstruct the number or names?
• Do the numbers / names remain visible in the dark / mist / rain?
• Do you regularly have issues with delivery drivers being unable to locate your property?
• Are council street signs present, undamaged, legible and appropriately located?
• Are there any other issues that would prevent or restrict emergency services reaching your address quickly and in an emergency?
