I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Personal theft (e.g. pick pocketing, no violence used), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Criminals often target shoppers in busy supermarkets using distraction techniques to steal personal belongings. In supermarket car parks a person approaches shoppers as they are getting into their vehicle and tells them they have left something in their trolley. When the shopper gets out to check, the suspect or an accomplice may use the distraction to steal items from the vehicle.
Our officers know that theft, in all its forms, can be an upsetting experience and are committed to tackling it wherever they find it. If you notice anything suspicious, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where thieves operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible. We keep our website updated with the latest advice and guidance on keeping yourself safe, but in summary remember to: • Be aware of your surroundings – only take out valuables if you feel it’s safe. • Do not leave valuable items unattended. • Make sure any bags you have are not left unattended, and are closed securely.
