I wanted to provide you an update regarding robbery, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. This is an update of what the police and your local Safer Neighbourhood Team are doing to curb the number of robberies on the ward and its environs.
An operation was launched at the beginning of June 2026 , called Operation Lugharyn. It is a partnership initiative in Barnet Borough (mainly Friern Barnet) focused on the prevention and reduction of robbery, particularly affecting young people and those travelling to and from schools. The operation brings together police, the Council, Trading Standards (external contractors), MITIE, schools, and other key partners to identify risks, protect potential victims, and target offenders through a coordinated approach.
The operation uses a range of tactics, including high-visibility and plain-clothes patrols during peak travel and school hours, spontaneous visits to second-hand mobile phone shops to identify stolen devices, intelligence sharing between police and schools, and targeted awareness campaigns through social media and visible crime prevention signage. By combining prevention, education, engagement, and enforcement, Op Lugharyn aims to reduce opportunities for robbery and make Barnet's communities safer.
The initial implementation has so far resulted in approximately ten to twelve percent reduction in robberies in Friern Barnet.
Many thanks,
We will continue to tackle robbery in your local area. While we are investigating and arresting those responsible, please consider following the below advice to keep yourself and your property safe: Do not leave your phone, tablet or other digital goods unattended, out of sight or on a table. Be aware of your surroundings and only use your phone when it is safe to do so. Put your phone away when you have finished using it. Secure your phone by choosing a strong pin or password Keep a note of your IMEU number (to access, type *#06# on your phone keypad) Plan your route, especially if you are going somewhere you have not been before. Keep to busy, well-lit streets and walkways. Move with purpose and appear confident.
