Hot Weather, Fire, Flood and Water Safety and Support for Vulnerable Neighbours

Given the current Weather alert for London this is to draw your attention to the advice from Government Beat the heat: staying safe in hot weather and London Fire Brigade, including the added risk if mobile phones, let alone e-bikes, are charged in direct sunlight, Batteries and chargers - Fire safety at home , and from barbecues on balconies BBQ Safety

Yesterday LFB issued a statement on Weather-related calls (please note Flooding advice for homes ) and urged people to take care outdoors during exceptional heatwave in London this week .

There is also an added need for Neighbourhood Watch participants to keep an eye open for vulnerable neighbours. This LFB advice is particularly relevant Caring for vulnerable people .

In order to help improve the ability of geographically-based street/estate Neighbourhood Watch groups to work in partnership with community, faith, health, wellbeing and youth group to identify and supporting the vulnerable we will have a stall at the next Team Lambeth Volunteer Fair (Saturday 11th July, West Norwood Library) 11.00 – 14.00 to meet those with whom we could and should be working on joint programmes and projects. Please reply to this alert if you would like to join us on the stall and/or for a networking event afterwards in a local venue (first round, long and cold as necessary, will be on me).

Looking ahead the LFB Public Affairs has issued the statements below (see also the attached posters

London Fire Brigade is highlighting the role everyone can play in helping to reduce the risk of grass fires and wildfires during the summer months. Local authorities, landowners, and partners are encouraged to take proactive steps to manage vegetation and create natural fire breaks, particularly were open land borders homes and communities. Partners are also encouraged to help amplify the Brigade’s fire safety messaging, including advice on the safe use of BBQs, both at home and outdoors, to help prevent accidental fires. As part of the Brigade’s summer campaign, London Fire Brigade is also raising awareness of water safety risks, including the dangers of jumping into water and swimming in open water. The Brigade is encouraging Londoners to follow its safety advice and has been working with partners to improve safety around waterways. The public is also being reminded that throwlines are available at many waterside locations, providing quick access to lifesaving equipment that can support emergency rescues.
