Warm weather update |
Dear Whitechapel residents,
With the warm weather, we understand that many people may be tempted to cool off by swimming in Shadwell Basin. However, we would like to remind everyone that swimming in the basin is strongly discouraged due to the serious risks involved. Although the water may appear calm, it can be much colder than expected, which can lead to cold water shock, making it difficult to breathe or swim. There may also be hidden hazards beneath the surface, such as debris, sudden drops, and poor water quality, all of which increase the risk of injury or drowning. For your safety, please avoid entering the water and consider using designated swimming facilities or lidos instead. If you see anyone in difficulty in the water, do not enter the water yourself. Call 999 immediately, and if possible, throw something that floats to help the person while keeping yourself safe. Please help us keep everyone safe this summer by sharing this message with friends and family.
Kind regards, Whitechapel Neighbourhood Team
