I wanted to provide you with an update regarding cycle theft, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. increase in Pedal Cycle Theft – Crime Prevention Advice We would like to make residents aware that there has been a recent increase in thefts of pedal cycles across the Blackheath Westcombe ward. There are some simple but effective steps you can take to help keep your bicycle safe: Security Tips: • Always lock your bike – even if you’re leaving it unattended for a short time • Use a good quality D-lock or chain lock (ideally Sold Secure approved) • Lock the frame and both wheels to a solid, immovable object • Avoid leaving your bike in isolated or poorly lit areas At Home: • Store bikes in a secure shed, garage, or inside your property where possible • Consider fitting shed alarms or CCTV • Ensure sheds and gates are kept locked and secure Mark & Register Your Bike: • Register your bicycle for free on Bike Register • Take photos and make a note of the frame number and any unique features • Consider using a forensic marking kit or visible etching as a deterrent • Keep a look out for free Bike marking events that will take place across the borough. Stay Vigilant: • Report any suspicious behaviour or individuals in your area • If you see someone acting suspiciously around bikes, please contact us If your bike is stolen, please report it as soon as possible via 101 or online, or 999 in an emergency.
