Tractor Theft advice |

|
Staffordshire Police, and it's neighbouring Forces are seeing an increase in both the theft of and theft from tractors.
Offenders are targeting vehicles as well as high‑value components such as GPS units, batteries, tools, and fuel. These crimes are often fast, organised, and carried out by individuals who know exactly what they’re looking for. This trend is affecting farms, smallholdings, contractors, and rural businesses, and we’re asking owners to take a moment to reassess their security and strengthen any weak points.
Why tractors are being targeted? • High resale value on domestic and overseas markets • Quick‑to-remove parts like GPS, screens, and batteries • Remote locations that give offenders time and cover • Predictable routines that make planning easier for criminals Each of these factors makes tractor security more important than ever.
What can you do to increase security? • Review your perimeter: Check gates, fences, hedges, and access points. A single weak spot is often all an offender needs. • Upgrade physical security: Steering locks, wheel clamps, immobilisers, and heavy-duty chains make theft slower and riskier. • Secure GPS and electronics: These are prime targets. Use tamper-proof brackets or remove units when not in use. • Improve lighting: Motion-activated lighting around yards and barns removes the cover offenders rely on. • Install CCTV: Even basic systems deter opportunists and help us identify suspects. • Mark and register equipment: Forensic marking and national databases increase the chance of recovery. • Store keys securely: Never leave keys in the ignition or hidden nearby. • Vary routines: Change parking spots, timings, and storage habits to make planning harder for offenders. • Report suspicious activity: Reporting helps us build intelligence and act before further offences occur.
Small changes can make a big difference. Staying alert, reviewing your security, and reporting anything unusual helps protect not just your property, but the wider rural community.
