Harrogate Police have received a number of reports of damage to parked unattended vehicles with offenders taking items from within. Some tips and advice below. 1. The "Empty Car" Rule Remove valuables: Never leave bags, coats, laptops, or even loose change on your seats. Hide everything: If you must leave items in the car, lock them securely in the boot before you reach your destination. Criminals often watch people transfer items into the trunk from the pavement. Remove suction marks: Take down your sat-nav and thoroughly clean the suction cup marks from your windscreen, as they advertise expensive devices to thieves. 2. Smart Parking Habits Well-lit and open: Park in well-lit areas, busy streets, or areas covered by CCTV. Use approved facilities: When using multi-storey or public car parks, look for ones that display a "Park Mark" to ensure they meet recognised security standards. Lock it up every time: Always double-check that windows and the sunroof are completely closed, even if you are just stepping away for a minute. 3. Physical & Electronic Deterrents Steering wheel locks: Using a heavy-duty steering wheel lock is a highly visible deterrent that makes thieves look for an easier target. Pedal or gear locks: Locks placed over the brake, clutch, or gear-stick create an additional physical obstacle that stops a criminal from driving away. Alarms and stickers: Thatcham-approved alarms can alert you to tampering, while visual "protected by alarm" stickers can discourage opportunists.
