Community crime-fighting in Westminster
Local community policing is a huge priority for us in the Met and the bedrock of how we police London. Over the last year we have seen the results of that, with strong reductions across the city in crimes like robbery, bike theft and burglary.
As your local Neighbourhood Superintendent, I thought it was a good opportunity to let you know the sorts of things your neighbourhood policing team will be up to this week:
They will also this week be carrying out, joint patrols with partner agencies such as WCC and the Safer Business Partnership at the Strand, Whitehall and Old Pye Street. This will be to target anti social behaviour and neighbourhood crime.
This will give the ward an opportunity to meet your local ward policing team and discuss any ASB/crime issues you may be experiencing. Representatives from MEMO Housing and Westminster City Council will also be present. They will meet outside Reynolds House on the Estate from 1pm and then be on patrol throughout the estate until 3pm
These events are to address issues raised by the local community and target harden against bike theft in the area.
These are just some of the things we will be doing this week, our ward Sergeants will share their planned activities with each ward through Met Engage. These are examples of some of the work we do every day. Your neighbourhood team is embedded in your community and works around the clock to keep you safe. The range of issues they deal with is vast, from petty theft to sexual offences and violence. They operate alongside ‘response teams’, who are the officers who turn up in an emergency if you dial 999.
Problem solving policing - Our key priority is to deliver precise and collaborative community fighting through problem solving. By working with our key stakeholders we can identify the origins of crime and work with groups like the local council or businesses on creative ways to address them.
Police and Council Tasking Team
You might be interested to learn that we now have a Police and Council Tasking Team funded by Westminster Council that has a Sergeant and 8 Constables who are funded by and work in close collaboration with Westminster City Council to deliver -
Community Engagement and Reassurance The team prioritises visibility and responsiveness, engaging with local stakeholders to address real community concerns and build trust.
Intelligence-Led Tasking They use crime data, partner intelligence, and community feedback to target resources effectively in Westminster.
Targeted Operational Areas Operations focus on priority locations with high anti-social behaviour, drug activity, and acquisitive crime. Areas targeted so far include: Victoria street, Church street, Harrow road, Church street, Lisson Grove, Harewood Avenue, Maida Hill Market, Portnall road, Cabbell street, Churchill garden estate, Oxford street, Westminster bridge and Churchill garden estate.
Measurable Enforcement Outcomes PACT have achieved over 40 arrests and 58 stop and searches, removing drugs, weapons, and stolen goods. They also help to enforce the Westminster wide PSPO (Public Space Protection Order)
Visibility and Community Engagement Over 1,500 hours of high-visibility patrols enhance public reassurance and foster partnerships.
Thank you for staying in touch with us on Met Engage. We are here to help you - if there are issues that you think need to be addressed, please let us know.
