Hello Residents Bordesley Green,
I hope you have had a lovely week, or at least a peaceful one. Here at Bordesley Green Neighbourhood Team, we have been kept very busy between supporting Response with their demand as well as ensuring we protect our community engagement events. I want to highlight some of the fantastic work that our team have been doing for the last week to help support/improve the community.
PC Lucy Johnson has completed a Parent Workshop at Starbank Road – looking into Exploitation and Gangs. PC Ryan Stringer has completed a Parent Workshop at Alston Primary School - informing participants about knife crime. PC Ryan Stringer has completed a Year 6 Input at Alston Primary School – informing students about knife crime. PC Lucy Johnson has completed a joint visit with Licensing from Birmingham City Council to NISA on Finnemore Road – to inform staff about Anti Social Behaviour and Alcohol Consumption. PC Lucy Johnson and PC Abi Eaton have completed a proactive patrol of Digby Park, where they recovered 29 Nitrous Oxide Cannisters that have been safely disposed of. PC Lucy Johnson and PC Russ Sutheran have had a meeting with partner agencies to discuss new and exciting projects within the Bordesley Green community. PC Abi Eaton and PC Lucy Johnson have completed proactive patrols around Bordesley Green, targeting hot-spot areas. PC Samia Mohamud and PC Abi Eaton have conducted school patrols around Waverley Academy. PC Luke Cooper has been engaging in community work at Heartlands Hospital. Bordesley Green Neighbourhood Team have been tasked with supporting Response and attending multiple incidents throughout the week.
I would like to now discuss the crimes of note for the week. There seems to have been an increase in certain types of offences which I would like to highlight:
Theft-General: 4 x new reports, primarily occurring at Heartlands Hospital or Coventry Road. Theft-Of A Motor Vehicle: 4 x new reports, occurring around Belchers Lane, St Benedicts Road, Colonial Road and Yardley Green Road. Theft-From A Motor Vehicle: 2 x new report, primarily around Bordesley Green and Yardley Green. Theft-From The Person: 2 x new reports around Alum Drive and Pretoria Road. Robbery: 1 x new report which occurred at Marchmont Road. Burglary: 2 x new reports which occurred primarily at Heather Road and Fifth Avenue.
As we can see, there has been a rise in the number of thefts which have been occurring. I want to discuss ways in which we can best safeguard ourselves from becoming victimised.
Theft of Motor Vehicle: Whilst anyone can become the target of this offence, there are some ways to try to deter offenders from choosing your vehicle. Theft From Motor Vehicle: Sometimes, offenders are not interested in steeling a vehicle. Instead, they want to access the vehicle (often times meaning they cause damage to car windows/doors) to steal items inside. Theft From Person: This involves any items which are stolen from the physical person (without any force used). This can include pickpockets. Theft-General: This is a broader offence of theft, including items left behind by victims and items stored.
PS Leon Allen has attended a meeting recently with 2 Small Heath councillors to discuss issues that were prevalent in the community. Please see his notes on the meeting:
24/7 Shops and suspected drug dealing: As I mentioned, we work quite frequently with partners to conduct visits to the premises on our patch. Where anything is found or warrants further investigation, this is done. We have had some successful closure orders over the last few years and continue to push for them. Where we have gaps is with intelligence. We need the public to feed in information so that we are able to secure warrants etc. I made you aware that a license for opening 24 hours is not required if a location does not sell alcohol or food. There are also other issues of trading onto the footpath, no planning permission for canopies etc that should be enforced by the council.
Double parking: The suggestion was to start with information drops leading into enforcement. I have explained we have done this over the last two years with no noticeable change. We continue to ticket frequently but due to our tickets being digital, the community may not know we have issued a ticket. Ultimately I cannot put all officers into parking every day as it isn’t proportionate and poor use of officer time considering the seriousness of other issues. Where a traffic offence is spotted by an officer on our team, they take action. It was suggested that we should look into vehicles that are registered outside of the road they are found, if we suspect a fault with the insurance then we report this to the motor insurance bureau who will check. On top of this I made you aware that I cannot seize a vehicle for no insurance or MOT unless I have verifiable information that it has been driven I the last 24 hours. Similarly for no tax, I must wait until that tax has expired by 2 months and a day. If council enforcement could be stepped up and looked it, that would support. On top of this, reinstating the illegal dropped kerbs would also provide more parking as currently people cannot block the dropped kerbs which have been installed without council permission. Previously it was raised through the transport lead Cll Majid Mahmood on other solutions such as permits, one way systems or calming measures which was then passed to local councillors to use there provided budgets however there was no response.
Fireworks: I recognise the disruption of fireworks however it is difficult to tackle as pinpointing the origin is not simple and the fireworks have usually ceased by the time an officer is in the area (In the context of overnight fireworks)
On that note, I would like to wish everyone a happy rest of week and to make sure you stay safe. Until next time!
