Thinking of buying your own e-scooter? It’s currently illegal to use a privately owned e-scooter on roads or in public places because insurance is not available for them. This includes: Roads Pavements Parks Shopping centres Public spaces
If you are caught riding a privately owned e-scooter in public, it could be seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 for having no insurance , you could also face, Heavy fines ,Penalty points on your driving licence (or a future licence). If you seriously injure someone whilst riding an e-scooter, the incident will be investigated the same way as if you were driving a car or riding a motorcycle.
Where CAN you use your own e-scooter? You can only ride it on private land, such as a garden, and only with the landowner’s permission. Please ride responsibly and know the law before you travel.
Please also be aware that there are currently no authorised rental scheme's in Suffolk for E-Scooters.
