Community Notice – Protected Gulls (Seagulls)

We would like to remind residents and visitors that gulls (commonly known as seagulls) are protected under UK law and must be left alone.

🐦 Common Gull Species in the UK

Several types of gulls are commonly found across the UK, including in urban and coastal areas. All of the following species are protected under wildlife legislation:

Herring Gull – The most familiar urban gull; now a species of conservation concern due to declining numbers

Lesser Black-backed Gull – Frequently seen nesting on rooftops and inland sites

Greater Black-backed Gull – The largest UK gull, typically found near the coast but also inland

Black-headed Gull – Smaller gull, often seen in large flocks, especially outside the breeding season

Common Gull – Despite the name, less frequently seen in towns but widespread across the UK

Although gulls may appear abundant locally, several species—particularly the Herring Gull and Common Gull—have experienced significant population declines and are now on conservation watch lists.

⚖️ The Law

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to:

Intentionally kill, injure, or capture any wild bird, including gulls

Damage, destroy, or interfere with an active nest (one in use or being built)

Take or destroy eggs of any wild bird

We are issuing this message following a recent incident in which two gulls were reported to have been shot. This is a serious matter, and we are reminding all residents of their legal responsibilities regarding wildlife.
