Ahead of this years FIFA World Cup, The Metropolitan Police advise World Cup fans to stay safe by planning their journeys home in advance, remaining vigilant for pickpockets in crowded areas, and drinking responsibly to avoid violence. They also stress that counter-terrorism is a team effort; report anything suspicious immediately, as security checks will be high.
The Met Police and Counter Terrorism Policing offer these practical steps to stay safe during the tournament:
Personal Safety & Nightlife
Plan Ahead: Book your taxis or check late-night public transport schedules before the match ends to avoid being stranded.
Look After Your Valuables: Keep your mobile phone and wallet hidden in crowded venues. Beware of people getting "over-friendly" or physically bumping into you, as this is a common trick used to steal watches or phones.
Watch Your Drinks: Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers to prevent spiking.
Event Security
Arrive Early: Factor in extra time for security checks and bag searches at busy fan zones.
Be Vigilant: If you see an unattended bag or anything that feels unsafe, tell a steward or staff member immediately.
Follow Instructions: In the unlikely event of an emergency, listen closely to Public Address (PA) announcements and follow directions from stewards. Move away from the immediate area as quickly as possible without stopping to film the event.
Behaviour & The Law
Know Your Limit: Alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and violence inside venues or at home (domestic abuse) will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted.
Hate Crimes: Abusive or discriminatory behaviour, including online hate speech, is a criminal offense.
Drink Driving: Leave the car at home. The police operate strict crackdowns on driving under the influence of drink or drugs during tournaments.
