Distraction Theft Awareness- Supermarket Car Parks

Local officers are advising residents to remain vigilant following an increase in distraction thefts and pickpocket- style offences in supermarket car parks.

Offenders are targeting shoppers as they return to their vehicle. In some reported incidents, a suspect approaches a driver and claims they have left an item in their trolley or dropped something nearby. While the victim leaves their vehicle to check, the suspect or an accomplice takes advantage of the distraction to steal handbags, wallets, purses, mobile phones or other valuables from inside the vehicle.

To help protect yourself:

If you believe you have been the victim of a distraction theft, report it to police as soon as possible. If a crime is in progress or there is an immediate threat , call 999
