Dear Resident,

With the warmer weather now upon us, we all face the issues of remaining cool, especially when at home.

The main way many people keep their homes cool is to open windows, which does work if done correctly, but can also provide vulnerabilities in security.

In the Humberside Police area, entry is gained through an open window or an unlocked door in around 1 in 3 burglaries, so in times when the weather is warmer, we do see opportunist offenders looking for those weaknesses to allow easy access to a property

Below are some tips to consider as the weather gets warmer, to keep your property cool without reducing security.

During the day when the temperature outside is warmer than inside, keep windows and curtains closed to prevent the air inside warming up.

As the air cools outside, open windows to ventilate your property, but remember to close windows when you leave a room.

Don't leave ground floor windows open overnight, these provide easy access for burglars.

Opening upstairs windows will cool a property when the temperature outside drops, as hot air rises.

Create a cool room, keeping the full property cool can be difficult, so consider just keeping one room cool.

Use electric fans with a bowl of ice in front of them, this will provide cool air for the fans to blow around

The main security points that should be considered,

Lock your doors, even when you are in the property.

Close windows when a room is empty.
