As the weather gets warmer across Lewisham, more people—especially young people—may be tempted to cool off in rivers, lakes, and open water. While it can look safe, open water can be extremely dangerous. Please take a moment to understand the risks and keep yourself and others safe. Open water can be unpredictable and dangerous. There are no lifeguards at most natural locations. Stay out of the water, stay safe, and look out for each other. In an emergency, always call 999
Know the dangersOpen water is very different from swimming pools. Risks include: Even on a hot day, water temperatures remain very low.
Cold Water ShockJumping into cold water can cause an immediate shock response, including: This can affect anyone, even strong swimmers, and can quickly lead to serious danger.
If you fall into the waterRemember: FLOAT (Advice from the RNLI) The best way to float is to tilt your head back with your ears submerged. Try to relax and breathe normally. You can gently move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat if you need to. Spread your arms and legs out to improve stability – and it's OK if your legs sink, we all float differently. Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety. | ||
