Priority Residential Burglary Update/Advice |
||
|
In the morning of the 31st May 2026, two dwelling burglaries were reported to Police within the Nottingham Road, Basford area whereby unknown persons have gained access to both properties through an open window whilst the occupants were asleep, to steal electronic items. Both cases remain under investigation. It is likely that suspicious activity similar to this will be on the rise during the summer period. We would like everyone to remain vigilant and actively report any sightings of concerning behaviour. If you have experienced this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101. For ongoing incidences whereby the suspect is remaining on scene please dial 999. Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
Burglary is a particularly invasive crime that can have a lasting impact on victims. If you have been a victim and need support and help, you should have been offered the services of Nottinghamshire Victim CARE. You may have declined at the time, or not noticed the offer, but can refer yourself at any time by either calling 0800 304 7575 or visiting their website: www.nottsvictimcare.org.uk Burglars do not want to get caught, so taking action to make your home or business safe and less attractive to thieves can go a long way to reducing the risk.
Summer brings unique risks: open windows/doors, frequent holidays away, and easy access via gardens – here’s what to focus on with advice to assist you:
🔒 Secure all entry points (even when home) • Lock every window and door, including upstairs and roof windows; use window restrictors or locks if you want fresh air, never leave them fully open when out or asleep. • Patio/french doors are a top target: fit extra locks or anti-lift devices, as standard handle locks are easily forced. • Never leave keys in locks or visible near doors/windows (burglars can hook them out with tools) – keep them out of sight and reach. • Lock side gates and fences to block private back-garden access.
🏡 Make your home look occupied when away • Don’t advertise trips: avoid posting holiday plans or location updates on social media; don’t leave voicemails saying you’re away. • Use timer switches for lights, radios or TVs to turn on in the evening, matching your usual routine. • Ask a trusted person to collect mail, put out bins, or park in your drive – piled-up post or empty drives are clear signs you’re gone. • Never hide spare keys under mats, plant pots or fake rocks – leave one with a trusted neighbour instead.
🌳 Secure your garden and exterior • Lock away ladders, tools, wheelie bins and garden furniture – burglars use these to climb to upper floors or force entry. • Keep sheds, garages and outbuildings locked with strong padlocks; they often hold valuables or items that help break into the house. • Trim hedges, trees and bushes that block views of doors/windows – remove hiding spots; thieves prefer unseen access. • Fit motion-activated outdoor lighting – effective even in lighter summer evenings.
🛡️ Visible security to deter thieves • Set your burglar alarm at all times, even for short trips out; display alarm signs clearly. • Use doorbell cameras or outdoor CCTV – visible cameras are one of the strongest deterrents. • Mark valuables (electronics, bikes, jewellery) with a UV pen or property marker and register items on a national database, making stolen goods much harder to sell. • Keep bags, phones, car keys or cash out of direct sight; making the premises less attractive to thieves can go a long way to reducing the risk.
