Community Walk and Talk Update |
||
|
Dear residents of Westgate on Sea,
This afternoon we held the first Community Walk and Talk Event in Westgate on Sea as part of our efforts to increase community engagement, explore neighbourhood concerns, and share the progress we are making on previously identified issues. I was grateful to be joined by KCC Warden Jason Gordon and representatives from Westgate Town Council, engaging with numerous residents who came out to speak with us. I have summarised the key conversation points below:
Residents highlighted that the majority of children use the Lymington Skate Park for its intended purpose, and it is only a small number that are responsible for the damage to benches and equipment. We did establish that some environmental amendments could assist with reported crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. This included lighting around the seating area under cover; the closure of the park during certain night time hours; and signage around a code of conduct for expected behaviour at the park. A key issue which was raised several times at various stops was the option of CCTV in Westgate on Sea to act as a deterrent and also provide lines of enquiry for investigative purposes. This will be explored further by Westgate Town Council.
It was also highlighted that we need to address anti-social behaviour hotspots that attract problematic individuals. We currently have several vacant properties in the area of Canterbury Road which are a draw for youths. I have been contacting the property owners as well as the Empty Property department at Thanet District Council to look at options to better secure the locations and consider enforcement options for non-compliance.
I would also like to take this opportunity to reassure residents. Although the other coastal towns in Thanet have seen an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour over the past week owing to the school holidays and warm weather, Westgate on Sea has had very few reported incidents in comparison.
If you have any further concerns around crime or anti-social behaviour you can either contact Kent Police through our online reporting tool or through My Community Voice.
With kind regards Steve | ||
