Dear Resident, With the warmer weather up on us , West Mercia Police would like to remind residents about the serious dangers of swimming in open water such as rivers, lakes, canals, quarries, and reservoirs. While it may appear safe, open water can present hidden risks, including: Cold water shock – even on warm days, water temperatures can be dangerously low, causing your body to react suddenly and impair breathing.Hidden hazards – submerged objects, strong currents, weeds, and sudden drops can trap or injure swimmers.Poor visibility and depth changes – water can be much deeper or shallower than expected.Slips and falls – uneven, muddy, or unstable banks can lead to accidental entry into the water.Difficulty getting out – steep or slippery edges can make exiting the water very challenging.Every year, people lose their lives after entering open water unexpectedly or underestimating these risks. Our advice to residents: Avoid swimming in open water unless it is a designated, supervised area.Never enter the water after consuming alcohol.Keep a close eye on children and discourage them from playing near water edges. If you see someone in trouble, do not enter the water – call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service. Use reach or throw, but don’t go.Parents and guardians: Please speak with young people about these dangers, especially during school holidays and warm evenings. Let’s work together to keep our community safe. |
