I wanted to provide an update regarding Mobile phone theft, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Crime Prevention Message – Mobile Phone Theft & High Visibility Patrols Your local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is aware of ongoing concerns around mobile phone theft. These offences are often opportunistic, with offenders targeting people who are distracted or unaware of their surroundings, sometimes taking phones within seconds. In response, your SNT is carrying out high-visibility patrols in key locations and at peak times to deter offenders, provide reassurance, and respond quickly to incidents. This forms part of wider Metropolitan Police activity to tackle phone theft and disrupt those involved in this type of crime. Protect yourself from phone theft The Metropolitan Police advise taking the following steps to reduce your risk:
Stay alert when using your phone in public and be aware of who is around you. Avoid leaving your phone unattended or placing it on tables where it can be easily taken. Be cautious when entering passcodes in public, as offenders may watch or record you (“shoulder surfing”). Do not hand your phone to people you don’t know, even if they ask to borrow it. Put your phone away when not in use and only use it when you feel safe to do so. Use security features such as strong passwords, biometric locks (fingerprint/Face ID), and anti-theft settings.
Mobile phones are frequently targeted not only for the device itself but also for the personal and financial data they contain, making it important to keep devices secure. Reporting incidents
Call 999 in an emergency if a crime is in progress. Report non-urgent incidents via 101 or online. Provide descriptions of suspects, vehicles (e.g. bikes/mopeds), and direction of travel where possible.
Your local SNT will continue to carry out targeted patrols and engagement work in the community. Your vigilance, alongside continued police activity, is key to reducing phone theft and keeping our neighbourhood safe.
