I wanted to provide an update regarding knife crime, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. We are aware that many people may be worried about knife crime in their local communities. We are committed to tackling knife crime wherever we find it, in order to keep you safe. If you would like to know more about the guidance that is available, our website includes a number of important resources that can offer guidance, including what to do if you think someone you know needs help, how to keep people safe, and support organisations you can talk to. Passing on information to organisations such as Crimestoppers or Fearless can not only help after a crime or incident, but vitally stop something from happening. It’s knife crime awareness week, and your local teams are out and about as part of our ongoing work to tackle knife crime and keep our community safe.
We are focusing on a few key areas this week to make a real difference:
• Supporting our shops - We’re visiting local retailers to provide guidance on responsible sales and conducting test purchasing to ensure knives don't end up in the wrong hands.
• Cleaning up our spaces - You might see us conducting weapon sweeps in local parks and open spaces to remove dangerous items from the streets.
• Working with partners - We are working closely with schools and local authorities to ensure young people have the support and information they need to stay safe.
Safety is a shared effort. We aren't just looking for knives, we’re looking to protect the people who live and work here.
