Arrest of Shopkeeper Linked to Handling Stolen Goods |
||
|
Dear Resident, We want to update you on recent proactive work by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. Following ongoing concerns about shoplifting in the area, officers carried out an investigation that has led to the arrest of a local shopkeeper on suspicion of handling stolen goods. It is alleged that the individual was purchasing items from known shoplifters who were stealing from local stores, which in turn encouraged further offending and impacted local businesses and the wider community. On Saturday 16th May 2026 the individual has been arrested and upon a search of their premises a large amount of stolen property, to the value of approximately £1000 was seized. The investigation remains ongoing. We understand the impact that shoplifting and related crime can have on residents and local shops. Tackling those who enable this behaviour is a key part of our approach, alongside targeting repeat offenders. The team will soon be sending out notices to local businesses reminding them of the consequences of purchasing goods from shoplifters and the subsequent impact it can have on their businesses whereby legislative powers, such as Closure Notices, can be considered to prevent further offending. We will continue to carry out patrols, work with local businesses, and take action against anyone involved in theft and the handling of stolen goods. If you have any information about crime or suspicious activity, please report it: Alternatively, you can report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Thank you for your continued support. Kind regards,
