In Rochdale, there is effectively a “zero tolerance” approach to drinking alcohol in public, backed by a legal order.

You shouldn’t drink alcohol in streets, parks, or open public areas

Officers don’t need to give warnings first

Even casual drinking (e.g. a can while walking) can be stopped

This is the main hotspot for enforcement:

Yorkshire Street (main high street)

Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre area

Rochdale Transport Interchange / bus station

Town Hall Square & Riverside area

Drake Street & The Butts

👉 These areas are covered by the town centre PSPO (extended to July 2027) and regularly patrolled by enforcement officers and police
