🚔🚔 Neighbourhood Policing Team 2 - Inspector Pickavance 🚔🚔 North
Safety Warning Following E‑Bike Battery Fire Incident Yesterday, Inspector Pickavance attended Greengate Metals to oversee the destruction of electric bikes and e‑scooters seized as part of Operation Eagle Eye. During the process, a lithium battery was being removed from one of the bikes when it suddenly exploded and caught fire. Staff acted quickly to contain the situation by placing the bike into a metal skip with a lid. Despite using six fire extinguishers, the fire repeatedly re‑ignited, highlighting the serious risks associated with lithium batteries. Inspector Pickavance would like to remind all parents and adults of the safety implications: Lithium batteries can be extremely dangerous if damaged, modified, or poorly maintained. Illegal or non-compliant e‑bikes and e‑scooters often contain unsafe or tampered batteries, increasing the risk of fire or explosion. Fires involving lithium batteries can be intense, difficult to extinguish, and capable of re‑igniting even after appearing to be under control. Never attempt to repair, modify, or remove batteries yourself. Always use approved chargers and equipment, and avoid leaving devices charging unattended. Store and charge e‑bikes and e‑scooters in safe, well-ventilated areas, away from escape routes. These incidents demonstrate how quickly things can escalate and how serious the consequences can be. We urge parents to speak with young people about the dangers of using illegally modified or unsafe electric bikes and scooters. #Team2 #InspPickavance #OpEagleye #GreengateMetals
