Dear Residents;
We are currently seeing an elevated level of reports of vehicle crime in the area with a number of reports of vehicles being broken into and items stolen from within. We call this type of crime “Theft from Motor Vehicle” or TFMV for short.
If you live close to a reported offence you may receive a further BeeInTheLoop Alert asking you if you have witnessed anything and to check CCTV.
Offenders are breaking into secure vehicles by smashing windows allowing them access to steal items from within. It appears offenders are targeting vehicles where items have been left visible in the car.
Commonly stolen items include bank cards, sunglasses, tools, electronic devices and clothing.
Officers from the Neighbourhood Priority Crime Team, The GMP Bolton North Neighbourhood Policing Team and Forensic Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) are working hard to bring the offenders to justice and will be increasing activity and vigilance in the affected areas.
Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to GMP using 999. Please also ensure that all offences are promptly reported to GMP using 101 or online at gmp.police.uk even if you don’t think there is an evidence. All reports are reviewed by officers and crime scene examiners accurate reporting allows us to target our activity into the right locations at the right time.
To help protect your vehicle, we strongly encourage the following preventative measures:
• Remove all items of value and all bank card. Do not leave items visible in the vehicle.
• Install an aftermarket or third party immobiliser and alarm
• Consider fitting an approved immobiliser that prevents the vehicle being started. This can prevent offenders from driving the vehicle away even if they manage to unlock it and access the onboard computer or manufactures immobiliser.
• Use a physical security device such as a steering lock or pedal lock box even when leaving the vehicle for just a few moments such as at a shop, car parks and even petrol stations.
• Block your vehicle in or use a barrier on driveways etc – Consider using rising bollards, locking gates or barriers or using other vehicles to make it more difficult to drive away.
• Store keys securely – Don’t make it easy for thieves. Keep fobs away from doors and windows, ideally in a signal blocking pouch to reduce the risk of relay attacks. Do Not Store spare keys in the vehicle.
• If you have a garage – Use it to store your vehicle keeping it out of sight and far more secure than in the open.
