I wanted to provide you an update regarding Personal theft (e.g. pick pocketing, no violence used), which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. ATM Distraction Thefts in Area Criminals are currently operating in the Stonecot area using distraction tactics to steal bank cards and PINS at ATMS. How the scam works: 1. Observation: A thief stands nearby to watch you enter your PIN 2.Distraction: A second person creates a distraction -such as tapping you on the shoulder, pointing to money dropped on the ground, or saying the machine is faulty. 3. Theft: While you are distracted, they steal your card and or swap it for a fake.
How To Protect yourself Cover your Pin: Always use your hand or body to cover the keypad, even if no one is nearby. Be Aware of Surroundings: If someone is standing too close or acting suspicious, do not use the ATM. Ignore Distractions: If stranger tries to talk to you or points at the ground, ignore them and focus on your transaction. Secure Your Card Immediately: Do not walk away until your card is safely back in your wallet/ purse Check the machine: Look for tampering ( sticky residue, loose card slot) If you feel unsafe or something feels wrong, cancel the transaction.
