The dangers of playing near to and entering electricity substations. |

Hello, we have had reports of children playing near to and entering the electricity substation on Lordsfields Avenue, however we would like to make you all aware of the dangers of this and ask you to speak to your children and warn them of the dangers. We have spoken to electricity North West and they are looking into making them safer. Playing in or near an electricity substation is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. These facilities are designed to handle high-voltage electricity, which behaves differently than the power in a standard home outlet. Primary Dangers Arcing (Electricity Jumping): You do not need to touch equipment to be injured. High-voltage electricity can "arc" or jump through the air to a person if they get too close. The higher the voltage, the further the electricity can jump—sometimes up to 3 meters (10 feet) UK Power Networks. Step and Touch Potential: During an electrical fault, the ground itself can become energized. Step Potential is the danger of electricity flowing through your body from one foot to the other just by walking near an energized object. Touch Potential occurs if you touch a fence or structure while standing on the ground, creating a path for the current to travel through your body ExpertCE. Arc Flash and Explosions: Equipment failure can cause a violent, explosive release of energy known as an arc flash. These produce blinding light, concussive blast waves, and temperatures reaching 35,000°F, which is hotter than the surface of the sun ExpertCE. Unseen Hazards: Bodies are roughly 70% water, making them excellent conductors. If you enter a substation, electricity may use your body as the easiest path to the ground, leading to instant cardiac arrest or severe internal burns UK Power Networks. What to Do if You Lose an Item If a ball, drone, or phone goes over a substation fence, do not attempt to retrieve it yourself. Even using a "non-conductive" object like a wooden stick is dangerous because moisture or dirt on the stick can still conduct electricity SSEN. Check the Gate: Look for the name of the substation or the operator's emergency number on the yellow warning signs. Call 105: In the UK, you can call 105 to reach your local network operator. They will send trained engineers to retrieve your items safely for free Electricity North West. Keep Your Distance: Stay at least 10 meters (33 feet) away from the fencing while waiting for help to arrive NPCElectric. Warning Signs to Look For Bright Yellow "Danger of Death" Signs: These are placed on fences and gates as a critical warning that entering the area could be fatal Electricity North West. Humming or Buzzing: While normal for transformers, loud or irregular noises can indicate high-voltage discharge or malfunctioning equipment NPCElectric. Ozone Smell: A faint metallic or "clean" smell can indicate that electricity is actively discharging into the air nearby NPCElectric.
