PREVENTING TOOL THEFT FROM VEHICLES According to insurance industry research, tools are stolen from a tradesperson's vehicle every 20 minutes in the UK. There are a number of things you can do to prevent tool theft and increase the chances of getting your tools back if they are stolen. Don't store your tools in your vehicle overnight. Property mark your tools and register them on immobilise, the UK National Property Register at www.immobilise.com/help/registertool If you must store your tools in your vehicle: Lock doors and windows, physically checking that they are secure. Make sure your alarm/immobiliser is set and consider investing a second alarm system which is not controlled by the central locking mechanism. Park in a garage or a secure area covered by CCTV. Consider upgrading physical security e.g. door locks and lockable ladder clamps. Internal security cages and storage boxes can be used. These should be secured to the vehicle itself. Always use police preferred security products, details of which can be found at www.securedbydesign.com Don't leave personal items on display in the driver's area of the vehicle. Never leave the vehicle unattended and insecure when unloading tools.
HELP POLICE IDENTIFY STOLEN ITEMS Photograph valuable items, keep a written description of each and include them on your insurance policy. Register each item on www.immobilise.com Be an active member of your local Neighbourhood Watch.
