“We are pleased to share a positive update with the Barking Town Centre community:”
Officers responded swiftly following reports from a bus driver on Longbridge Road, who flagged down police after a passenger allegedly spat at the cab screen and directed racial abuse towards him.
The individual was located nearby by officers. While engaging with the suspect, further information came to light indicating that he had entered a local shop, where he is alleged to have assaulted staff, made threats, and stolen money from the till.
Officers moved to arrest the suspect, who resisted. During the arrest, two officers were assaulted. One officer sustained a head injury, while the other was kicked, punched, and subjected to racial abuse. Additional officers attended the scene to provide support. It was also alleged that the man made threats toward staff and impersonated a police officer in an attempt to obtain further money.
The suspect is now in custody, and enquiries remain ongoing.
We recognise the impact incidents like this can have on our community. Barking Town Centre officers remain committed to keeping residents, businesses, and transport staff safe, and we thank those who came forward with information and supported police at the scene. | ||
