Seized E-Bike - Ash |
Good evening,
Whilst on patrol in Ash today, I observed an electric bike being ridden which was not road legal. The mechanically propelled vehicle was being ridden at speed using full electric power with the aid of a throttle and requiring no ‘pedal power’ at all. As a result, it does not meet the legal requirements for use on public roads or cycle paths under British law. During the encounter, the rider initially failed to stop for police but was located a short distance away. The e‑bike has now been seized, and the matter is being dealt with accordingly. I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that while electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular, it is essential they are compliant with the law. Only Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs) can be used on roads and cycle paths without the need for a driving licence, insurance, or vehicle registration. To be classed as road‑legal, an E‑bike must meet the following key requirements: Any e‑bike that does not meet these standards is classed as a motor vehicle and can only be used legally if it is registered, insured, taxed, and the rider holds the correct licence. Failure to comply can result in enforcement action, including seizure of the vehicle. The same applies for all E-Scooters. I encourage anyone who owns or uses an e‑bike to check that it is road legal and suitable for public use. If residents are unsure, advice and guidance can be found online or by contacting myself at any local drop-in session. Regular patrols will continue across Ash and surrounding villages to ensure the safety of all road and path users and to address concerns raised by the community.
