Mopeds and scooters can be stolen very quickly, especially if they are left with little or no security. Taking a few simple steps can make a real difference and help protect your vehicle. The Metropolitan Police advise using more than one type of security so your moped is harder to steal and less appealing to thieves. Simple Ways to Protect Your MopedLock it- Use a disc lock, grip lock or D‑lock to secure the wheels and controls.
- Using more than one lock makes theft more difficult.
Chain it- Put a strong chain through the rear wheel, as front wheels can be removed easily.
- Secure the chain tightly to something solid like a ground anchor or street furniture.
- Keep the chain off the ground if possible.
Cover it- A cover hides the make and model and makes your moped less attractive to thieves.
Remove the keys- Always take your keys with you and use the steering lock, even if you’re only leaving it for a few minutes.
- Do not rely on the steering lock alone.
Extra protection- Consider fitting a Thatcham‑approved alarm or tracker.
- Mark your moped and its parts so they can be identified if recovered.
