Moped and Vehicle Theft

Good Morning Residents

Over the past week, we have seen a number of reported stolen mopeds and attempted vehicle thefts across the Tunbridge Wells area. These offences often happen quickly and are frequently committed by opportunists targeting vehicles with limited security.

To help reduce the risk of theft, police recommend a layered security approach, often summarised as “Lock, Chain, Cover.” Mopeds are lightweight and can be easily lifted or forced away, so relying on a steering lock alone is not sufficient, as it can be broken in seconds.

How to Protect Your Moped

🔒 1. Lock & Chain – Physical Security

Use multiple locks: Combine different types of locks (for example, a disc lock and a heavy‑duty chain). The more barriers you create, the less attractive your bike becomes.

Chain to an immovable object: Always secure your moped to something solid such as a lamppost, ground anchor, or street furniture.

Keep chains off the ground: Thread the chain through the rear wheel and frame, keeping it tight and raised. This makes it harder for thieves to use bolt cutters or angle grinders.

Disc locks: Fit a disc lock to prevent the wheel from turning. Alarmed disc locks provide an extra audible deterrent.

👀 2. Cover & Deter – Visibility Matters

Use a cover: A simple cover hides the make and model, making the moped less appealing to thieves targeting specific bikes.

Alarms & trackers: Consider fitting a Thatcham‑rated alarm or GPS tracker. Alarms draw attention; trackers greatly improve the chances of recovery.

Mark your moped: Forensic marking kits (such as Datatag or SelectaDNA) mark parts with your VIN or postcode, making them harder to sell on and easier to return if recovered.

🅿️ 3. Safe Parking Practices

At home: Park in a locked garage or shed if possible. If parking outside, use a ground anchor.

In public: Choose well‑lit, busy areas, ideally covered by CCTV.

Remove keys: Never leave keys in the ignition, even for a short time.

If you see suspicious behaviour or believe a theft is taking place, please report it immediately on 999.
