Vehicle Crime Prevention Advice: Fulham Town Ward (April 2026) Theft from motor vehicles remains a key priority in the Full in Town Ward. Local police are encouraging residents to adopt a "layered security" approach, as thieves often target unlocked vehicles or those with visible items. Most thefts are carried out by opportunists who try door handles until they get lucky.Follow this practical advice to protect your vehicle and belongings: 1. Secure Your Vehicle (The "Clean, Lock, Protect" Principle)Always Lock: Get into the habit of locking your vehicle, even if leaving it for just a few minutes, such as when popping into a shop or parking on your own drive.Check Handles: Manually check that your doors are locked before walking away.Close Everything: Ensure windows and the sunroof are fully closed to prevent 'fishing' (using a stick or coat hanger to grab items). No Exceptions: Never leave your vehicle running unattended (e.g., to warm it up), as this is illegal and voids insurance. 2. Remove All Valuables Empty the Car: Do not leave bags, tech, laptops, sunglasses, work tools, or even spare change on display.Remove Clues: Remove sat-nav suction mounts and wipe the screen. A holder or a cable on view tells thieves a device is likely in the glovebox .Use the Boot: If you must leave items in the car, hide them in the boot before you arrive at your destination. 3. Keyless Entry Protection (Relay Attacks)Block the Signal: If your car has keyless entry, keep your key fob (and spare) in a signal-blocking Faraday bag when at home.Store Safely: Store keys away from front doors and windows, where thieves can use devices to bridge the signal to the car. 4. Park Smart Well-lit & Busy: Park in busy, well-lit areas, ideally covered by CCTV. Secure Parking: Use a private garage if you have one, or look for car parks with the 'Park Mark' safer parking scheme logo.Turn Wheels: If parking in a secluded spot, turn your wheels toward the kerb and park close to walls to prevent towing. 5. Additional Security & Reporting Visible Deterrents: Use a steering wheel lock or pedal lock, which are strong visual deterrents.Secure Plates: Use tamper-resistant screws to stop your number plates from being stolen for other crimes.Report Everything: If you see anyone suspicious loitering around vehicles, report it on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress. | ||
