I am contacting you all today to provide you with vital information about Ask for Angela.
You may or may not have heard about this initiative that help women in need when they are out and about.
Ask for Angela has asked people to share the following information about changes in the law.
The 'Protection from Sex-based Harassment in Public Act 2023' came into force 1 April 2026. BEFORE this date (S.4A) only led to up to 6 months custodial:
This was based on S.4A and a general intentional harassment with no sex-based aggravation recognised. No specific offence for street harassment.
NOW (S.4B) and up to 2 years custodial.
Sex-based aggravation is now a specific offence. Higher sentence reflects severity of targeted, sex-based public harassment. It also reflects the governments commitment to tackling VAWG. NOTE: This law applies to all sexes, however women are disproportionately likely to be victims.
