Op Retail-Reporting Shoplifter |
Dear Valley Ward Businesses Members,
Please see attached about the Op Retails-How to report and a witness statement
Operation Retail is the Metropolitan Police Service's (MPS) streamlined, London-wide process designed to tackle business and retail crime, specifically targeting shoplifting and supporting retail workers. Launched in late 2023 following a successful pilot, the initiative aims to increase efficiency in reporting and investigating offenses, particularly when offenders are no longer on the scene. Key Aspects of Operation Retail Targeted Shoplifting: It focuses on cases where the suspect has left the premises, enabling faster processing and investigation without requiring immediate officer attendance. Evidence Submission: Retailers are encouraged to provide full victim details and upload evidence packs (including CCTV and statements) via secure links. Investigative Focus: Submitted evidence is reviewed by the Police Telephone Digital Investigation Unit (TDIU) and local officers, allowing them to use tools such as facial recognition. Reducing "Myths": It addresses the misconception that thefts under £200 are not prosecuted, assuring retailers that these are investigated and, where possible, prosecuted. Collaborative Approach: The Met works with Business Crime Reduction Partnerships (BCRPs), Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), and retailer head offices to share intelligence and identify repeat offenders. How to Use Operation Retail Immediate Danger/Suspect Present: Continue to call 999 for emergency situations where violence is used, threatened, or the offender is still present. After-the-Fact Reporting: For simple shoplifting where the suspect has departed, report via 101 or the online reporting tool at met.police.uk. Evidence Submission: Use the provided secure email link from the TDIU to upload CCTV and statement evidence packs. Victim Support: The MPS Victim Focus Desk (VFD) is available at 0207 484 6700 (open 7 days a week) for assistance with evidence submission. Recent Developments and Impact Increased Action: The Met has seen a significant increase in solving shoplifting cases, with a 92% rise in solved cases reported as of late 2025. High-Profile Operation: Operation Zoridon was conducted to target organized shoplifting gangs, resulting in numerous arrests and recovery of stolen items. Continued Challenges: Despite improvements, the Met has noted it is "not realistic" to attend every shoplifting case due to demand. Call for Action: As of late 2025, the Met has pushed for businesses to better support prosecutions by improving evidence sharing and not allowing staff to refuse to provide statements. Operation Retail is considered a key component of the 'A New Met for London' plan, aiming to improve trust, build partnerships with the business community, and reduce the impact of retail crime. | ||
