Oil Tank Theft – Protect Your Property Oil tanks are increasingly being targeted by thieves as they contain valuable fuel and are often located outside properties.
Following recent thefts in Earl Soham and Wingfield, we’d like to share some practical crime prevention advice to help protect your oil tank and reduce the risk of theft.
Prevent Theft Although oil tank theft is on the rise, there are steps you can take: Conceal the tank location where possible so it isn’t visible from the road. Please check current regulations before doing any work: oftec.org/consumers/off-grid-guides/your-home-guide-to-liquid-fuel-heating Fit a robust padlock or lockable filler cap Look for products tested and approved by Sold Secure. Sold Secure - Security Product Testing & Approval Secure the tank within a cage or compound Extra protection can be provided by a secure storage compound. Police‑preferred perimeter treatments can be found at: Secured by Design - Secured by Design Install lockable gates to restrict access. Use an electronic oil gauge that can trigger an alarm if oil levels suddenly drop. Install security lighting near the oil tank. Fit CCTV with motion detection, ideally set to alert you to activity around your property and fuel tank.
