A 53-year-old man who attempted to evade police and immigration officers during a joint agency visit to a business premises in Brandon has been jailed.
Ramazan Koksal, of High Street in Brandon, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday 27 March, charged with two counts of possession of false identity documents with intent. He had pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
He denied the charge of assault on an immigration officer, and this was left to lay on file.
Suffolk police partnered with Home Office Immigration Enforcement Officers on Friday 13 February in an operation in Brandon and Mildenhall, targeting cash-intensive businesses that were suspected of involvement in exploitation and modern slavery.
The activity involved officers from the constabulary’s Kestrel Team and the Investigation Support and Development Unit, along with the police Modern Slavery Tactical advisor, and saw eight businesses visited following reports of suspicious activity from members of the public.
As police and immigration enforcement entered a takeaway premises in High Street, Brandon, officers saw a man dressed in dark clothing leave to the back of the premises. They followed him outside as he was getting into a car.
An immigration officer opened the car door and indicated for the driver, Koksal, to stop, to which he responded by revving the engine and reversed the vehicle as an immigration officer was holding on.
A taser was deployed and Koksal was arrested. Fortunately, the immigration officer was not injured.
In addition to his sentence, Koksal’s driving licence was endorsed with eight points for driving without insurance, and a further three points for driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
An order was also enforced for the destruction of Koksal’s false documents, and he was ordered to pay a £370 confiscation order.
