***Witness Appeal - Disturbance of Seals - Conservation of Seals Act 1970*** |
||
|
Good Morning,
Police have received a report on 20th March 2026 at around 1300 hrs. In this incident three members of the public were seen to be shouting and moving towards a large group of seals resting at Flamborough Head. This can be distressing to seals and their seal pups and we would urge everyone that lives and visits the beautiful coastline of East Riding of Yorkshire to not approach them.
The Conservation of Seals Act 1970 is a law aimed at protecting and conserving seal populations in England, Wales and Scotland as well as adjacent water. It prohibits the intentional killing, injuring or taking of seals. Around our coastline we also have a Water Code of Conduct which is in place to protect marine wildlife, and we would urge everyone who visits and uses the water to make themselves aware of this conduct. This has been attached for your information.
Please do not approach or disturb groups of seals as it is not only distressing to the seals but also to our rural coastline communities. I would urge anyone that witnesses such behavior to call Police. 999 if a crime in progress or offenders nearby or on 101.
