ASB and Retail crime operation continues in Stockport

Yesterday 27/03/26 the Stockport Central Neighbourhood team supported by officers from E response team, GMP mounted unit and key partner Merseyway security engaged in Operation Rimini in Stockport town centre.

This operation was launched to enhance community safety, disrupt criminal activity, and strengthen public confidence through visible policing and proactive engagement. The operation focused on high‑footfall areas identified through intelligence, community feedback, and recent incident patterns in Stockport Town Centre.

A core objective of Operation Rimini is to build trust and rapport with residents and businesses. Officers engaged with community members throughout the deployment, providing reassurance, gathering intelligence, and addressing concerns raised on previous patrols.

Key outcomes:

Increased visibility led to more residents approaching officers with information.

Local businesses reported feeling more supported and reassured by the enhanced presence.

25 members of the community engaged with our community stand in the Merseyway and signed up to GMP’s Bee in the loop site.

This engagement not only strengthened relationships but also contributed to a more accurate understanding of emerging issues within the area.

Proactive policing formed a significant part of the operation, with officers conducting targeted stop searches and interventions based on reasonable grounds and live intelligence.

Results:

Arrests – There were six arrests for offences including possession of controlled drugs, Theft, fail to appear at court, assault on a retail worker, breach of Criminal behaviour order, assault emergency worker and drink drive.

Stop searches – There were six stop searches conducted in line with legal powers and best‑practice guidance, resulting in three positive searches.

Out of court disposal – There was one community resolution issued for theft.

Insp 19966 Jason Holmwood said “This monthly intensification of resources in Stockport Town Centre continues to make the town a safe place for workers and people coming into the town of Stockport. The operation has now surpassed 100 arrests and 200 stop searches since the launch in 2023 bringing offenders to justice and showing a zero tolerance for crime in the area.”
