Trading Standards visit: Illicit tobacco sales

Good afternoon,

An update regarding trading standards working alongside the local Policing team performing routine inspections at licenced premises selling tobacco. A total of thirteen licenced premises were inspected with the use of trained dogs to find any illicit goods, illicit goods were found in four of the businesses. 

In total, 181 packets of illicit cigarettes, 50g of illicit hand rolling tobacco and 750g of illicit chewing tobacco were seized. Three businesses are in line for formal letters of warning with follow up inspections in due course, while the fourth may progress to prosecution as it is a business which has previously been prosecuted in relation to their alcohol licence. 

Continued partnership between the local Policing team and partner agencies will continue to produce results where reports of these businesses continue to come to police notice.
