Good Morning; I hope I am not tempting fate but it is starting to look like Spring has finally arrived and that unfamiliar object in the sky is casting it’s warming rays upon us. With this in mind many people will be starting to look at the garden with a view to carrying out a Spring Tidy-up to get and getting the garden ready for Summer.
This is an ideal opportunity to take a step back and consider home and garden security as you work around the garden. Often offenders will not carry tools to carry out offences with them, instead they will utilise whatever they can find around to help them commit an offence. This can include everyday items like garden spade, screwdrivers, trowels etc to pry doors and windows, Offenders can use loose bricks, rocks or slabs to smash windows and offenders can use bins and containers to carry goods or as climbing aids to climb fences, walls or onto roofs. By removing or securing these items you can remove the opportunity and reduce the risk of falling victim to an offence.

While in the garden this weekend consider Have a tidy up, remove or secure loose bricks, slabs and stones. Consider securing wheelie bins and storing them away from walls and fences where they could be used as a climbing aid. A simple and effective method is to secure bins in a group with a basic cable bike lock through the handles. This makes the bins difficult to move and creates noise if they are moved. This method can also help where bin theft is an issue. – Remember to unlock them on bin-day! Have a walk around and check for any tools that have inadvertently been left out while working in the garden. Check the locks on gates, sheds, garages and the house? Do they all operate correctly? Do they all operate correctly? Could they be upgraded? Do all doors shut correctly or is adjustment needed? Do you have CCTV? Have you checked the camera view, both in the daylight and at night? Is the system recording properly? Do the cameras need cleaning / repositioning? Consider the effects of sunlight and light sources on the image? Do you have signs warning would be offenders of the presence of your cameras? Take the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the operation of the system – try downloading a section of footage?
Do you have valuable tools, toys and equipment in your garden? Consider registering your goods at https://www.immobilise.com/ to allow an accurate record should the worst occur and the items be stolen. Bikes can also be registered online at https://www.bikeregister.com/ Remember to close and lock doors when working in the garden to guard against “sneak in thieves”
