A 33-year-old man from New Milton has been jailed for six years after being found guilty of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. of another man in 2023. Miguel Navarro Costa, of Andrew Lane, was sentenced when he appeared at Southampton Crown Court on Tuesday (10 March). He had previously been found guilty of the offence during a three-day trial between Wednesday 26 November and Friday 28 November 2025. It follows the assault of a man in his 40s at a social club on Christchurch Road, New Milton on the evening of Monday 17 February 2023. During the incident, the court heard that the victim was struck in the face with a pint glass, leaving him requiring hospital treatment and stitches. As well as the time he will now spend behind bars, Costa must also pay a £228 surcharge. Speaking after sentencing, investigating officer, Detective Constable Ellie Williams, said: "I am extremely pleased for the victim in this case that justice has now been served. "Costa refused to accept responsibility for his actions that evening, leaving it to a jury to establish the full facts of his guilt. "This was a shocking act of violence, which could easily have left the victim with far greater physical injuries. "Fortunately, this was not the case, but the victim must still live with the memory of what happened that evening. "While I understand this outcome will not rid him of those memories, I do truly hope that it allows him to move forward, safe in the knowledge that Costa is locked away and cannot repeat such violence against anyone else."
