Dear residents,
On 9th & 13th March 2026, we had a reports from two residents, that unknown suspects had interfered with their vehicles. A hole was cut into the drivers door of BMW X6 and the front dashboard LED displays had been removed and a Toyota CHR had its front bumper pulled away, thankfully the vehicle was not taken and we believe this to be related to the below:
CAN bus attacks, a sophisticated hacking technique used to steal vehicles in under three minutes, particularly affecting models like Toyota RAV4 and Lexus, This method involves bypassing the car's security systems by accessing the Controller Area Network (CAN) wiring, often through the front bumper or headlight wiring, to unlock and start the car without a key.
Key Information on CAN Bus Attacks & Met Police Response: Targeted Vehicles: High-performance and modern vehicles are most at risk, with specific mention of Toyota (RAV4, Prius, Hilux) and Lexus models, along with some Dodge/Mopar vehicles. How Attacks Occur: Thieves access the CAN bus system (often located behind the headlight) and inject false messages to deactivate security features. Modus Operandi: The thefts are silent and quick, leaving no broken glass, with attackers often ripping out tracking devices or dashboard electronics. Police Advice: The Met urges drivers to use physical, visible deterrents to counter the digital theft, such as:
Report Incidents: The Met advises reporting suspicious activity on their site or via 101, or 999 in an emergency.
Thank you
