Don't welcome burglars this spring |
||
|
Afternoon Resident
As spring 2026 begins, West Midlands Police is urging residents in Wednesfield (WV11) and Heath Town (WV10)
"rake up their defences" and avoid welcoming burglars into their homes.
Sample WMnow Alert: "Don't Welcome Burglars This Spring" "Spring is a busy time for gardeners, but don't let it be a busy time for burglars. Open gates and tools left on lawns are an open invitation for crime. Whether you're at the front of the house or just popping inside for a brew, always lock your back gates and secure your shed. Don't provide the tools for your own break-in."
Spring Security Checklist for Wednesfield & Heath Town Local neighbourhood teams recommend these specific measures for the WV10 and WV11 areas: Garden Tool Discipline: Never leave ladders, spades, or heavy ornaments lying out. Opportunists often use these to smash windows or pry open doors. The "One-Metre Rule": Keep front hedges and fences below one metre. This ensures neighbours can see anyone tampering with your front windows or doors. Defensive Planting: Use "nature's barbed wire"—thorny shrubs like Pyracantha, Berberis, or Holly—along rear boundaries and under vulnerable windows to create a painful barrier. UPVC "Lift, Lock, Remove": If you have a UPVC door, you must lift the handle and turn the key to fully engage the multi-point locking system. Shed Anchoring: Ensure your shed is anchored to the ground to prevent it from being lifted. Consider a battery-operated shed alarm as an inexpensive extra layer of protection.
Local Community Meetings You can speak directly with your local officers about these security tips at upcoming sessions: Heath Town Surgery: Tuesday, 17 March 2026, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM at Stratton Street Community Centre.
