Nitros Oxide - The Dangers of Use and Impact in our Communities |
||
|
Dear All
I wanted to take a moment to highlight the growing concerns around the misuse of nitrous oxide (often referred to as NOS or “laughing gas”) within our communities.
While nitrous oxide has legitimate uses in medical and catering settings, its misuse can pose significant risks to those who take it and to the wider public. When inhaled recreationally, NOS can cause dizziness, confusion, loss of coordination, and in some cases unconsciousness. These effects increase the risk of accidents, particularly when individuals are near roads, operating vehicles, or in unsafe environments.
Repeated or heavy use can lead to more serious health consequences. Nitrous oxide interferes with the body’s ability to use vitamin B12, which can result in nerve damage, numbness in the hands and feet, difficulty walking, and in severe cases long-term neurological problems. There have also been instances where misuse has led to serious injury or even death.
From a community perspective, we are also seeing an increase in discarded canisters in public spaces, parks, and rural areas. Aside from the environmental impact, this can be concerning for residents and contributes to wider anti-social behaviour issues.
It is important that we continue to raise awareness of the risks associated with NOS misuse and encourage responsible behaviour. If you have concerns about its use in your area, please report it through the appropriate channels so that it can be addressed. Please report to us what areas you see these cannisters discarded or where persons are using these substance.
Thank you for your continued support in helping keep our communities safe | ||
